![]() ![]() model Ratio Tyre options Engine size Part number And finally, you can't always get the gear you want (like a 16-tooth gear might not be available) and that as your tires wear your roadspeed will slow slightly in comparison to your indicated speed.Heres a list of gear colours for different gearbox, diff and tyres size combo's What you are doing is simply adjusting the ratio. Also, it is just an example, you may have a different number of teeth on your gear. ![]() Keep in mind that this assumes everything else stays the same (tire size, and axle ratio). So if you went with a 17 tooth gear (in this example) you would still read about 3% low or you could go with a 16 tooth gear and be about 3% high. Now multiply the number of teeth on that plastic gear by the ratio, like 18 teeth X 0.916 = 16.5. Now count the teeth on the plastic gear on the transmission end on the speedometer cable, is should have something like 18 teeth. Take the ratio of indicated speed vs actual speed, ie 55 indicated / 60 actual = 0.916, or about 8% low. It seems as if my best result will be to calculate my needs based on the drive/driven gears that I already have, factoring in my current error.īut that’s where my head starts to explode.īack to the basics, if your speedometer is indicating too slow for a given road speed then you have to turn it faster. I could swap to an 8-tooth drive gear easily enough, but again, I feel that this will move me in the wrong direction. My pea-brain tells me that I want a smaller driven gear to speed up the speedometer reading, but the couple of online calculators I have found tell me to use a 23-tooth driven gear behind my 9-tooth drive gear, which does not exist. The following numbers are indicated speed / GPS speed: 20/22. I went out today and tested the speedometer against a GPS. My current speedometer gears are green-drive, 9-tooth, and red-driven, 21 tooth. I’m running a TH350, 3.73 rear gears, and 29” (measured from ground to axle center x 2) tires. I just changed to a larger diameter rear tire and, as expected, my speedometer now reads lower than actual speed. I’ve been here before proclaiming that math makes my head explode, and I’m now back to beg for more: ![]()
